IEC Canadian National Committee welcomes new president

The Standards Council of Canada is delighted to announce that Shawn Paulsen is the new president of Canada’s national committee to the International Electrotechnical Commission (CANC/IEC).

Shawn Paulsen, previous manager of conformity assessment with CSA Group, has extensive knowledge in technical and policy standards. He previously served as vice-president of the IEC, vice-president of the CANC/IEC, and chair of IEC’s Conformity Assessment Board. Shawn has contributed significantly to the IEC System of Conformity Assessment Systems including the IEC conformity assessment system for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE) and has participated in many IEC task forces and working groups as well as regulatory advisory councils in Canada and the United States. He is actively involved in several Canadian national IEC committees and was the president of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Shawn succeeds Colin Clark, senior operating partner and chief technical officer at Brookfield Renewable, who also serves on SCC’s Governing Council. During his tenure as CANC/IEC president, Colin was re-elected to the IEC Council Board, served on the IEC Governance Task Force, the IEC Internal Transformation Task Force, and the IEC Council Board Task Force responsible for developing the IEC Masterplan implementation plan.

“SCC is honoured to have had Colin lead Canada’s national committee to the IEC,” said Chantal Guay, CEO, Standards Council of Canada. “We commend him for his exemplary collaboration with global leaders in governing the IEC.”

“We are delighted to congratulate Shawn on his new role,” said Pierre Bilodeau, vice-president of Standardization Services at SCC. “With his wealth of experience in electrotechnical standardization, we are confident he will advance Canada’s interests on the world stage.”

SCC oversees the work of CANC/IEC as Canada’s member body at IEC. CANC/IEC is responsible for providing strategic advice on Canada’s participation in IEC, and identifying priorities and emerging issues in the electrotechnical sector. Through CANC/IEC, interested parties across Canada can engage in IEC standards development and conformity assessment activities.
