Background

The UKCA mark is the new product marking for specified goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (i.e. England, Wales and Scotland). Currently the British market recognizes both the CE and UKCA marks, but starting January 1, 2023 only such goods with UKCA marking may be placed on the market in Great Britain.

On June 20, the UK government announced a range of changes that aim to simplify the transition to the UKCA mark. A key change is that the UKCA mark can be declared based on existing CE certification if this certification was completed before January 1, 2023. This will remove the need for re-testing and re-certification of products that are imported into the UK for a period of time. UKCA marking will no longer be able to be declared under this mechanism as soon as the applicable CE certification expires or needs to otherwise be reviewed.

The UKCA marking shall be used for placing goods on the market in Great Britain (i.e. England, Scotland, and Wales) from 1 January 2023. The UKCA marking may be used now and the UK government is encouraging its use as soon as possible.
