Benchmark energy factor (BEF) assessment of industrial refrigeration systems
1 Scope 1.1 Inclusions This Standard provides requirements for benchmark energy factor (BEF) assessment intended for refrigeration systems with the following characteristics: a) refrigerated storage and refrigerated processes for food and beverage products; b) vapour-compression cycle that provides cooling by convection or conduction; c) refrigerated zone volume equal to or greater than 283 m3 (10 000 ft3); and d) process cooling capacity equal to or greater than 70 kWR (20 TR). 1.2 Exclusions This Standard is not intended for the following systems: a) stand-alone packaged walk-in coolers and freezer units; b) mobile refrigeration units; c) cryogenic freezing processes; and d) grocery and retail facilities. 1.3 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.
