Manually operated gas valves for appliances, appliance connector valves and hose-end valves
1 Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to manually operated gas valves, hereinafter referred to as valves, not exceeding 4 in (102 mm) pipe size, and pilot shut-off devices, hereinafter referred to as devices constructed of entirely new unused parts and materials. Except for hose-end valves not intended for permanent connection to a hose, and appliance connector valves, these valves and devices are intended to be used as part of a gas-fired appliance. This Standard does not apply to manually operated gas valves for use in above-ground fuel gas piping downstream of the gas meter outlet and upstream of the gas appliance connector valve. These valves are covered in CSA 9.4 and ASME B16.44. 1.2 This Standard applies to valves and devices for use with natural and propane gases, unless otherwise stated within this Standard, at maximum operating pressures of 1/2 psi and up to and including 72 psi (496 kPa). 1.3 Hose-end valves not intended for permanent connection are limited to 1/2 psi (3.45 kPa). 1.4 This Standard applies to valves and devices capable of operation at ambient temperatures of 32 °F (0 °C) to 125 °F (51.5 °C), unless a higher temperature, lower temperature, or both, are specified by the manufacturer (see Clause 5.1.2). 1.5 A valve may be an individual valve or may be incorporated as part of a device that includes other means to control main burner gas, with the components of such a device performing a function other than that covered by this Standard complying with the applicable American National Standard(s) or Canadian Standard(s). 1.6 Compliance with this Standard does not imply that such valve or device is acceptable for use on gas appliances without supplemental tests with the valve or device applied to the particular appliance design. 1.7 If a valve for measurement as given in this Standard is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to be regarded as the specification. 1.8 All references to psi throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures, unless otherwise specified. 1.9 In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.10 For conversion of units, see Annex A.
