Energy efficiency of high-intensity discharge (HID) and low-pressure sodium (LPS) lamp ballasts
1.1 This Standard applies to all ballasts for high-intensity discharge (HID) and low-pressure sodium (LPS) lamps intended to operate with an input line frequency of 60 Hz. Note: Safety requirements for ballasts are provided in Part 2 of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 74. 1.2 This Standard defines the measurement technique for determining the efficiency of HID and LPS lamp ballasts for use in HID and LPS luminaires. 1.3 This Standard defines minimum energy efficiency levels for HID and LPS lamp ballasts. Note: Power factor is also an important energy management consideration, but is not within the scope of this energy efficiency definition. 1.4 This Standard does not apply to a) regulated-lag metal halide lamp ballasts; b) electronic metal halide lamp ballasts that operate at 480 V; c) high-frequency electronic metal halide lamp ballasts that operate a lamp at an output frequency of 1000 Hz or greater; and d) specialty application mercury vapour lamp ballasts. Note: Speciality applications mercury vapour lamp ballasts are defined in Clause 3. 1.5 In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
