Energy performance of portable electric signs
1.1 This Standard specifies requirements and test procedures to determine the performance of portable plug-in luminous signs. Note: Background information on the scope and objective of this Standard is provided in Annex A. 1.2 This Standard applies to portable electric signs for indoor or outdoor use, in nonhazardous locations, intended for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, on branch circuits of not more than 125 V between conductors and involving lamp voltages of not more than 7500 V. 1.3 This Standard includes requirements for a) internally illuminated signs (cabinet); b) unfiltered light emitting diodes (LEDs); and c) unfiltered cold cathode/neon tubing. 1.4 This Standard does not include requirements for a) stationary indoor and outdoor signs; b) externally illuminated signs; c) unfiltered incandescent lamps that are not part of an electronic message center (EMC), an internally illuminated sign, or an externally illuminated sign. This exception applies only to portions of a sign that are unfiltered incandescent lamps; Notes: 1) Although internally illuminated signs are mentioned in this exception, it is only those portions of a hybrid sign consisting of unfiltered incandescent lamps that are excluded from the sign lighting energy requirements. 2) See the definition Unfiltered sign in Clause 3. d) exit signs; e) traffic signs; and f) electronic displays. 1.5 In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.6 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
