CAN/CSA-ISO/IEC 10646-2:04
This National Standard of Canada is equivalent to International Standard ISO/IEC 10646-2:2001 (first edition, 2001-11-01).
1 Scope
ISO/IEC 10646 specifies the Universal Multiple-Octet Coded Character Set (UCS). It is applicable to the representation, transmission, interchange, processing, storage, input and presentation of the written form of the languages of the world as well as additional symbols.
ISO/IEC 10646-1 specifies the overall architecture and the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) of the UCS. ISO/IEC 10646-2 specifies Supplementary Planes as follows:
- the Supplementary Multilingual Plane for scripts and symbols (SMP) of the UCS and defines a set of graphic characters used in scripts not covered by the Supplementary Plane for CJK Ideographs (SIP) and the BMP;
- the Supplementary Ideographic Plane (SIP) of the UCS and defines a set of graphic characters that are used in East Asia.
These are defined as CJK ideographs (East Asian ideographs);
- the Supplementary Special-purpose Plane (SSP) and defines a set of special purpose use graphic characters;
- the names for graphic characters of these planes, and the coded representation using the four-octet (32-bit) canonical form of the UCS. Graphic characters that are already encoded in ISO/IEC 10646-1 are not duplicated in these Supplementary Planes.
In addition, any character is assigned to only one code position within the set of Supplementary Planes specified in this Part of ISO/IEC 10646.
NOTE - The Unicode Standard Version 3.1 provides a set of characters, names, and coded representations that are identical with those in this Part of this International Standard. It additionally provides details of character properties, processing algorithms, and definitions that are useful to implementers.
