Mechanical/Electromechanical Lifting Devices for Persons
1. Scope 1.1 This Standard specifies safety requirements for mechanical/electromechanical devices used in the lifting and moving of persons. It includes requirements for design, construction, maintenance, and use of such equipment and accessories, particularly where these are related to the safety of the person being lifted and the operator of the equipment. 1.2 This Standard provides (a) manufacturers, suppliers, and end users with performance specifications for lifting devices, with the intent of reducing the possible risk of musculoskeletal and other injuries to persons who are either operating the device or being lifted; and (b) guidance regarding the safe functioning, proper maintenance, and adequate labelling of lifting devices. 1.3 This Standard is not intended to supersede federal and provincial occupational health and safety acts and other regulations and legislation. Note: Variations may exist in each province and territory. 1.4 In this Standard, "shall" indicates a mandatory requirement; "should" indicates a recommendation, or that which is advised but not mandatory. Notes accompanying Clauses do not include mandatory or alternative requirements. The purpose of a Note accompanying a Clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material that is not properly a part of the Standard. Notes to Figures and Tables are considered to be a part of the Figure or Table and are written as mandatory requirements.
