Task Chairs for Office Work With Visual Display Terminals
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard applies to task chairs for office work with Visual Display Terminals (VDT) by providing dimensional requirements and methods for measuring chairs and assessing their performance. 1.2 This standard describes the chair types for three levels of single-shift use: Type 1 - Use of the computer and of other equipment is the primary task of the user, with infrequent interaction with other people and little variability among tasks. Type 2 - Use of the computer and other equipment is not the primary task of the user and work entails frequent interaction with other people and a variety of ancillary tasks. Type 3 - Use of the computer and other equipment by the user is at a minimal level and the work entails mostly ordinary clerical, managerial and conference tasks. 1.3 The performance and the dimensional requirements respect generally acceptable ergonomic guidelines and are based on the actual field and product testing experience of the members of the Canadian General Standards Board Committee on Office Chairs. As a source of anthropometric data, the Committee referred to NATICK/TR-89/044, 1988 Anthropometric Survey of U.S. Army Personnel: Methods and Summary Statistics. Sept. 1989. 1.4 The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
