Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2: Particular requirements for battery chargers
1. Scope This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows: 1.1 Replacement: This standard applies to mains-operated, self-contained battery chargers incorporating static rectifiers, having an output at safety extra-low voltage, for household and similar general purposes and suitable for recharging batteries for automobiles, appliances and the like. Battery chargers not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as battery chargers intended for use in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. Examples of such battery chargers are battery chargers for gardening appliances and battery chargers for use in garages and the like. This standard does not take into account the special hazards which exist in nurseries and other places where there are young children or aged or infirm persons without supervision. This standard does not apply to: - battery chargers for building-in; - battery chargers designed exclusively for industrial purposes; - battery chargers intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); - charging assemblies for battery-powered appliances having a low input, such as those covered by IEC Publications 335-2-19 and 335-2-20 (see also IEC Publication 335-2-18); - charging assemblies for toys; - charging assemblies for electronic equipment. For battery chargers intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary. For battery chargers intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements may be necessary. Attention is drawn to the fact that in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities and the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour.
