Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres - Part 11: Instrinsic safety "i"
1 Scope 1.1 This part of IEC 79 prescribes the specific requirements for the design, construction, testing, and marking of electrical apparatus and electrical systems with type of protection "i". It also contains requirements for associated apparatus that is not protected for use within an explosive gas atmosphere but contains both intrinsically-safe circuits and non-intrinsically-safe circuits that can affect the safety of instrinsically-safe circuits. Note - The "electrical apparatus" or "electrical system" will be defined by the manufacturer or other party making the claim of compliance with this standard. 1.2 These specific requirements are additional to the following general requirements in IEC 79-0. IEC 79-0 Remarks Clause reference 1 2 except for 2.1 and 2.12 which are replaced by 3.1 and 3.15 of this part respectively. 3 4 Applies to instrinsically-safe apparatus only. 5 Except for 5.2 and 5.3. 6 Except for 6.1 and 6.2. 7 13 14 Except for 14.3. 22 Except for 22.4.3.2 applies to portable electrical apparatus only and that 22.4.6.1 and 22.4.7 apply to intrinsically-safe apparatus only. 23 24 25 Note: Intrinsically-safe apparatus and systems, and intrinsically-safe portions of associated apparatus, of Category "ib" are permitted in IEC Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas, but not Zone 0 areas. Division 1 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I encompasses both IEC Zone 0 and 1 areas; therefore equipment evaluated and tested to Category "ib" is not acceptable for Division 1.
