Canadian OSI Registration Procedures and Guidelines - Part 1: Registration Procedures for Organization Names
1. Scope and Field of Application 1.1 This Standard defines the procedures for the assignment and registration of numeric and alphanumeric name values for all organizations that wish to have numeric and/or alphanumeric names publicly known and registered at the national level for the purpose of open systems communication. 1.2 Registration ensures that name values that are unique within a prescribed organization (eg, Canada in the case of this Standard), are assigned in accordance with the appropriate ISO/IEC Standard and are available to interested parties. 1.3 The National Registration Authority appointed by SCC and CNO/CCITT is responsible in Canada for the registration at the national level of organization names in the hierarchically structured naming scheme for OSi objects. 1.4 Due to differing registration requirements, distinct registration name spaces exist for the following types of OSI information object: a) numeric name values for Organization Identifiers for use in Data Country Code (DCC) scheme of NSAP addressing (see CSA Standard Z243.110.2); b) numeric name values for organization for use in constructing object identifiers (see CSA Standard Z243.110.3); c) alphanumeric name values or use in constructing directory names (see CSa Standard Z243.110.4); and d) alphanumeric name values for message handling domain names (see CSA Standard Z243.110.5). 1.5 An organization that has a name value registered with the National Registration Authority becomes a recognized subauthority for assigning names to organizational units and other objects (appropriate to the type of registered object) within its domain for the purpose of OSI communication. The name value registered with the National Registration Authority shall be prefixed to all names assigned by that organization to objects of the appropriate type in its role as an OSI registration subauthority. 1.6 Any organization that does not wish to be tied to Canada in the hierarchically structured naming scheme may act, subject to Canadian national regulations, as a registration subauthority directly under the ISO. To do so such an organization must obtain an ICD (international code designator) value from the British Standards Institute, designated by the ISO as the international registration authority responsible for ICD values.
