Standard Practice for Dilute-Solution Viscosity of Photodegradable Polystyrene
Scope Z217.1 1.1 This practice outlines a method for the determination of the dilute solution viscosity of polystyrene products in tetrahydrofuran (THF). It is applicable to nondegraded and photodegraded polystyrene samples. It is used for the determination of relative viscosity (viscosity ratio), inherent viscosity (logarithmic viscosity number), intrinsic viscosity (limiting viscosity number), and viscosity average molecular weight. These values will be used to quantify polystyrene degradation as part of a classification system. 1.2 This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Z217.2 1.1 This method determines the degradation of polystyrene foams by measuring mass loss due to a combination of abrasion and impact produced by a laboratory tumbling device. 1.2 The values stated in metric (SI) units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in parentheses are provided for information only. 1.3 This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
