CAN/CGSB-9.0 No. 1-92
This National Standard of Canada is based on International Standard ISO
302:1981.
1.1 The Kappa number test is used for evaluation of pulps with regard to the
degree of delignification and bleachability.
1.2 The method can be applied to pulps produced in yields up to about 65% and
giving Kappa numbers not higher than 100 on hardwood pulps, and not higher than
120 on softwood pulps (Note 1).
Note 1: High-yield pulps consume less permanganate for a given yield and
lignin content, and cannot be evaluated by this method. Another method,
Technical Section, CPPA standard G.32P can be used for evaluation of the whole
range of pulps for delignification and bleachability.
