Wheelchairs - Determination of Static Stability
This National Standard of Canada is equivalent to International Standard ISO 7176/1-1986. 1. Scope 1.1 The purpose of this Standard is to provide guidance to assist clinicians and wheelchair users in interpreting the increased information that will appear in manufacturers' literature as a result of testing in compliance with this Standard. Stability requirements vary considerably with the application of use. Users are recommended to review their particular application, including gradients specified under the prevailing building codes, in conjunction with this Standard. 1.2 The tests determine the stability characteristics of wheelchairs in the forward, backward, and transverse (sideways) directions. 1.3 This Standard specifies methods for determining the static stability of wheelchairs. 1.4 In this Standard, shall indicates a mandatory requirement; should indicates a recommendation, ie, that which is advised but not mandatory. Notes accompanying clauses do not include mandatory or alternative requirements. The purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material that is not properly a part of the Standard. Notes to figures and tables are considered to be part of the figure or table and are written as mandatory requirements.
