CAN/BNQ 2501-250-M86
The present standard describes the methods of determining the relation between
the moisture content and the density of soils and soil aggregates when these
are compacted in standard moulds using 2,49 kg rammers dropped a height of 305
mm. Four methods are described herein.
NOTE 1 - The laboratory compaction tests described in this standard generally
provide good measures of optimum moisture contents and maximum densities except
for soils and soil aggregates of high permeability. For these materials the
given tests often do not provide accurate moisture-density relations, and the
maximum masses thus derived are generally lower than those obtained using
vibration methods.
1.1 Method A
The test is carried out on material passing through the 5 mm sieve in a mould
of 101,6 mm in diameter.
1.2 Method B
The test is carried out on material passing through the 5 mm sieve in a mould
of 152,4 mm in diameter.
1.3 Method C
The test is carried out on material passing through the 20 mm sieve in a mould
of 152,4 mm in diameter.
1.4 Method D
The test is carried out in a mould of 152,4 mm in diameter on material passing
through the 20 mm sieve and then corrected by replacing the material retained
by the 20 mm diameter sieve.
NOTE 2 - The method to be used is usually specified by the requesting party.
If no method is specified, the procedure described in chapter 5 shall be
followed.
