Applies to patient care areas in hospitals, defining essential elements of a program for the use of electricity in patient care areas, with the object of minimizing the risk of injury to patients and those attending them. The standard includes requirements for the electrical installations in patient care areas, for the electrically-powered equipment used in patient care, and for the management of the use of the equipment in patient care. It does not include requirements for supplying power to electrical systems when the normal supply is interrupted, particular requirements applicable to anaesthetizing locations in health care facilities, or particular requirements applicable to situations in which oxygen is being administered to a patient.
