Add-On Heat Pumps
1. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to add-on heat pumps for comfort heating or heating and cooling not exceeding 20 kW in the cooling mode and rated at 600 V or less, single or polyphase, intended to utilize the fan assemblies and duct work of the existing installed furnaces to form the complete functional systems where the existing parts are not covered by this Standard. Note: For the purpose of this Standard, an add-on heat pump normally consists of an outdoor section, one or more indoor sections (without circulating fan) and optional related control devices as specified by the manufacturer. The separate assemblies are to be used together and the requirements are based on the use of specified matched assemblies. 1.2 This Standard does not apply to the combination of a heat pump and a supplementary electric resistance heater or heaters as defined in the scope of CSA Standard C22.2 No.186.1, Central Forced Air Unitary Heat Pumps With or Without Electric Resistance Heat. 1.3 This Standard does not apply to an add-on heat pump system designed to utilize the indoor fan motor assembly of an installed furnace where: (a) The heat pump and furnace are intended to operate simultaneously during heating operation except as noted in Clause 4.14.5.2; or (b) The indoor coil is intended to be mounted upstream (return air side) of the furnace or in parallel to the furnace. 1.4 This Standard does not apply to heat pumps comprising field connected refrigerant-containing parts other than specified material assemblies as indicated in Clause 1.1 1.5 Heat pumps covered in this Standard are intended for installation in accordance with CSA Standard C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I; B139, Installation Code for Oil Burning Equipment; C273.1, Installation Requirements for Air-to-air Heat Pumps; and CGA Standard CAN1-B149.1, Installation Code for Natural Gas Burning Appliances and Equipment; CAN1-B149.2, Installation Code for Propane Burning Appliances and Equipment; and the installation practices given in CSA Standard B52, Mechanical Refrigeration Code. Note: CSA Standard B52 does not apply to equipment installed in private residences, unless otherwise provided by the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act of the respective Provinces and Territories.
