Commercial and Residential Central Air Conditioners
1. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to stationary air conditioning equipment for indoor and outdoor use, for central air cooling, rated at 7200 V or less, single or polyphase, designed to be used in nonhazardous locations in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. The equipment may be for direct cooling or air or for indirect cooling through another medium, such as water (liquid chiller). 1.2 This Standard applies to air conditioners, air conditioning type liquid chillers, and compressor-evaporators intended for use with a remote condenser. 1.3 This Standard applies to the cooling portion and associated components of the combined heating and cooling equipment using gas, oil, or electric resistance heating means. Requirements for the heating portion and the associated components shall conform to the particular Standard covering such heating equipment and components. 1.4 This Standard applies to air conditioners for cooling that consists of one or more factory made assemblies. Where the equipment is provided in more than one assembly, the separate assemblies are to be used together and the requirements are based on the use of matched assemblies. 1.5 This Standard does not apply to heat pumps or the combination of a heat pump and a supplementary electric heater or heaters. 1.6 This Standard does not apply to cord-connected room air conditioners for cooling or reverse cycle operation, or to equipment comprising field connected refrigerant-containing components other than approved matching assemblies. 1.7 This Standard includes requirements for the electrical features of air conditioning equipment and also requirements for the mechanical safety of refrigerating systems forming part of the equipment.
