1. Scope 1.1 These recommended practices outline general procedures for the magnetic particle method of inspecting commercial steel castings, forgings and weldments. This general inspection method is applicable only when referenced to and supplemented by a detailed component specification. 1.2 The method is suitable for detection of surface and near-surface defects. In most instances, for the detection of subsurfaces defects it is recommended that other nondestructive inspection techniques supplement the magnetic particle method. 1.3 The purchaser is required to specify in the detailed component specification, the final acceptance limits (par. 3.1) or the purchaser and the supplier shall agree to accept the decision of qualified inspection personnel (see Section 8).
