Scope

The provisions of Clause 1 of UL 62368-1, Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment – Part 1: Safety Requirements, apply, except as follows.

Replacing first paragraph with the following:

This standard addresses the safety of micromobility charging equipment with rated voltages not exceeding 600 V that is intended to only be used with micromobility systems, subassemblies, and/or components covered by UL 2849, Electrical Systems for eBikes, UL 2272, Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices, or UL 2271, Batteries for Use In Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) Applications.

Micromobility charging equipment provides docking, locking, charging, and controls for battery-powered micromobility devices, and consist of some or all of the following components:

  • field wiring and field installation means;
  • distribution panelboards, powerboards, disconnects, and overcurrent protective devices;
  • power conversion units;
  • built-in charging circuits and battery management systems;
  • charging interfaces;
  • interactive kiosk systems; or
  • assemblies consisting of racks, shelves, and enclosures that could contain any of the above components.

Adding the following to the bottom:

Micromobility charging equipment covered by this standard is intended for indoor use unless otherwise investigated for use in outdoor locations or protected locations when designated by the manufacturer for those locations.

This standard is intended for evaluation for electric shock and other hazards presented by micromobility charging equipment that are encountered by ordinary persons, instructed persons, and maintenance persons.

This standard does not include requirements that apply to charging equipment intended for on-road electric vehicles (EV) and heavy duty off road vehicles.

NOTE 101 The term over-the-road electric vehicle (EV) refers to an over-the-road automotive type vehicle for highway use, such as a passenger automobile, bus, truck, van, motorcycle, or similar vehicles.

This standard does not evaluate the anti-theft protection or other security features of micromobility charging equipment.

Project need:

Project Need
There are currently no consensus standards published in Canada for micromobility. With increased efforts to fill the first and last-mile gaps, shared micromobility prevails not just to facilitate public transit but also to address congestion, emissions, and noise pollution in the urban environment. Commercial and consumer micromobility charging equipment is usually owned or operated by public-private partnerships and inter-municipal cooperation and provides docking, locking, charging, and controls for micromobility devices. Many micromobility charging infrastructures comprise of stations, kiosks, charging interfaces, built-in charging circuits and battery management systems, power conversion units, and field wiring/installation means, and they are intended to be permanently connected to an electrical grid, located outdoors, and open to public access. However, recent ebike fires fatalities spurred the need for product safety standards for micromobility devices as well as their charging equipment.
