Note: The project need of this Notice of Intent (originally published on December 6, 2022) was updated by the responsible SDO on January 31, 2023.

These requirements cover automatic sprinklers including conventional, spray, sidewall, extended coverage, residential, certain specific application sprinklers and storage sprinklers including early suppression fast response (ESFR) intended for installation on sprinkler systems for fire-protection service. Requirements for the installation and use of sprinklers are included in the National Building Code of Canada, Standards for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13; Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes, NFPA 13D; and Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Low-Rise Residential Occupancies, NFPA 13R; as well as other applicable NFPA Standards. The requirements in this standard are not intended to restrict the application of representative fire and other tests for special sprinklers, as referenced in Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13, that are intended to provide protection for specific fire hazards.

This amendment is to provide an editorial correction for metric conversion. UL also proposes to allow for the use of Actual Delivered Density (ADD) test data for the nominal K-22.4 and K-25.2 pendent ESFR sprinklers in lieu of conducting the large scale fire tests at the 30 ft. ceiling height. Extensive experience in conducting large scale testing on the nominal K22.4 and K-25.2 pendent ESFR sprinklers has revealed that the large scale testing at the 40 and 45 ft. ceiling heights has demonstrated to be the most challenging. To demonstrate that these sprinklers develop an effective discharge pattern at the lower pressures associated with the 30 ft. ceiling height, compliance with the applicable ADD criteria for the nominal K-14 and K-16.8 pendent ESFR sprinklers is specified in lieu conducting the large scale fire test. The ADD criteria for the nominal K-14 and K-16.8 pendent ESFR sprinklers was developed based upon extensive research testing which was correlated to large scale fire testing. See the following proposed revisions to Tables 55.18 and 55.20. An amendment is being made for Flexible Dry Type Sprinklers and Sprinkler with Integral Flexible Hose. For flexible dry-type sprinklers and sprinklers with an integral Flexible Hose, it is appropriate to reference the applicable requirements of UL 2443. Also, since the sprinkler attached to the hose may have flow characteristics that are different from a standalone sprinkler, there may be a need for the sprinkler to have unique features to provide a level of assurance that the proper sprinkler is used for replacement purposes.
