Scope

These requirements cover the construction and performance, exclusive of performance during fire tests, of water fire extinguishers. Water fire extinguishers are intended to be utilized in accordance with the Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, NFPA 10, and the National Fire Code of Canada.

These requirements cover stored-pressure, water fire extinguishers that use a single chamber for both the extinguishing agent and the expellant gas.

The extinguishers covered by these requirements may be charged with plain water, an antifreeze or a loaded-stream solution. See Extinguishing Agent, Clause 23.

The requirements for performance during fire testing of stored-pressure water fire extinguishers are specified in the Binational Standard for Rating and Fire Testing of Fire Extinguishers, ANSI/UL 711 CAN/ULC-S508.

Project Need
This proposal is intended to provide improved definition and clarity to salt spray corrosion testing required under ULC S507 and related portable extinguisher standards. It should not compromise the safety, functionality, or performance of an extinguisher. Unlike suppression systems, portables are subjected to repeated corrosion testing using randomly selected production samples. The intent of this testing is understandable. However, in practice, the requirement of zero defects is challenging at best in a manufacturing environment. Other corrosion standards, such as MIL-A-8625F, have taken a more pragmatic approach and permit a defined level of defects. Proposed changes include sample evaluation methods, decorative coatings/plating, aluminum components, porous surfaces/ imperfections and pre-approved components.
