Standard for Smoke Detectors for Fire alarm systems
Scope:
The Fourth Edition of CAN/ULC-S529:2016, published in January 2016, sets forth requirements for smoke detectors and accessories, including mechanical guards to be employed in ordinary indoor locations in accordance with the following:
- In the United States: NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code
- In Canada: CAN/ULC-S524, Standard for Installation of Fire Alarm Systems; National Building Code of Canada; and National Fire Code of Canada.
The following revisions are issued, which are applicable for the United States only:

New Annex I (Normative), Flaming and Smoldering Polyurethane Foam Tests and Cooking Nuisance Test Requirements; to improve the detection of smoke produced by new materials used in home furnishings (shift from natural, e.g., wood, cotton, to synthetic, e.g., plastics); and
New cooking nuisance test to avoid nuisance tripping from cooking events.
