This Standard sets forth minimum requirements for the determination of the acceptability of pipe joint compounds and tapes for piping systems intended for the containment of alcohol, alcohol fuel blends natural gas and methane, oxygen, petroleum distillates, propane and butane, steam, and water (potable and non-potable).

Unless otherwise specified, products meeting this Standard are considered

suitable for the sealing of all sizes of metal threaded connections.

Products intended for use on limited sizes of connections may be considered in accordance with the intent of these requirements and suitably marked.

This standard also provides for the determination of the flash point and ignition temperatures, and evidence of spontaneous heating, of pipe joint compounds.
