The proposed first edition of CAN/ULC-S589 is a binational standard that will cover requirements for heat-actuated, single and multiple station heat alarms intended for indoor installation in accordance with the following:

In the United States:  National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72, Chapter 11

In Canada:  National Building Code of Canada,  National Fire Code of Canada

These requirements do not cover electrically operated single or multiple station smoke alarms.
