Scope:

1.1 This Standard covers requirements for fire signal receiving centresand systems, which include transmitting and receiving equipment, proprietary fire signal receiving centreequipment and control unitaccessories for use in accordance with the following:a) CAN/ULC-S524, Installation of Fire Alarm Systems;b) CAN/ULC-S561, Standard for the Installation and Services for Fire Signal Receiving Centres and Systems;c) CAN/ULC S1981 Ed. 1 – Standard for Signal Receiving Centre Automation System;d) CSA-22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part l, Safety Standard for Electrical Installations; ande) Figure 1.1, Typical Arrangement of Equipment for Fire Signal Receiving Centres and Systems.

Project need:

This proposal seeks to create a category under CAN/ULC S559 for the evaluation of software based central station receivers. Software based receivers evaluated under UL 864 have been deployed by central stations in the US for many years. There is currently no congruent category in Canada. This is difficult to navigate for central stations who serve customers on both sides of the border.Adding the requirements from UL 864 Section 34.4 would create a create a category so that the same receiver that has been evaluated on the US side of the border can be deployed by central stations on the Canadian side.Adjustments such as placement within the standard and updating references to the relevant Canadian standard will need to be addressed by the working group. The relevant section from UL 864 is included here.
