Healthcare Education
Scope:
Health Standards Organization (HSO) is developing a new edition of its (Allied) Health Education Program Standard, which will be renamed Healthcare Education. This new edition will supersede the current National Standard of Canada (NSC) CAN/HSO 40001:2020 (Allied) Health Education Program Standard.
The current NSC outlines requirements for student attainment of competencies per a competency-based profile, student rights and safety, evaluation of student learning and progress, educational programming resources including faculty, management, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement.
The Healthcare Education standard will expand these requirements to include simulation-based learning, cultural safety and humility, environmental stewardship, equity-based principles and sustainability of educational programming.
The new edition will apply to entry to practice programs in allied health (e.g. Respiratory Therapy), technical fields (e.g. Medical Laboratory Technologist), clinical assistance (e.g. Medical Laboratory Assistant) and could be expanded to broader assistance programs (e.g. Recreation Therapy Assistant) and therapy programs (e.g. Kinesiology, Recreation Therapy).
This standard does not apply to healthcare education programs for physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, or midwives.
Project need:
This standard requires a technical update as part of routine maintenance.
