This Standard specifies the requirements for a systematic and comprehensive approach for the management of impairment in the workplace that will be closely aligned to CAN/CSA-Z1000-14 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System). Impairment is in reference to the dependency on illicit and licit (prescription) drugs and alcohol. The Standard provides a framework to maintain a health and safe workplace including

1. Management commitment and leadership;

2. Worker engagement and participation;

3. Risk assessment;

4. Evaluative and corrective processes; and

5. Ongoing monitoring and support.

Project need:

Project Need
Due changes in the workplace (such as the pending federal legalization of recreational marijuana in 2018), workplaces will be facing additional challenges to ensure that workplace impairment policies address all forms of substance abuse at work. This Standard will provide guidance on how workplaces can develop policies to meet this challenge and set out parameters for accommodation and support to ensure workplaces remain healthy, safe, and productive.
