This Standard specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety management system for managing work performed both indoors and outdoors under heightened-risk conditions presented by extreme environmental temperatures ( heat and cold), severe weather ( high wind, extreme levels of precipitation), low or high atmospheric pressure conditions, high altitude, and diminished visibility (e.g. absence of light, fog, smog, smoke, etc.). In addition, this Standard addresses risk escalation factors such as those presented by complex terrain and remoteness of the work site.

Project Need
To propose reaffirmation of Z1010, Management of work in extreme conditions. The anticipated impact of this Standard upon Canadian workplaces is to to manage work in extreme environmental conditions. This Standard addresses hazards and risk assessment, program planning and emergency preparedness. This Standard also provides guidance for dealing with unforeseen hazards and deteriorating conditions – when to stop work and when to evacuate, with the focus on prevention of harm and protection of workers.
