Scope

The objective of the Standard is to provide an evidence-based design decision methodology for health care facilities to conduct design research and  post-occupancy evaluation related to the suitability of the environment of care to support and enhance health care service delivery and the ability to attribute outcomes to design.

Project need:

Project Need
To support innovation in the field of evidence-based health care facility design by providing requirements for design research and the evaluation of built facilities after occupancy and the impact of design elements on patient and staff safety and health outcomes in the Canadian context. To develop a new national standard on this topic due to feedback from provincial regulators including the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Alberta Health Services that there is a need for guidance on essential facility design features that improve clinical performance and create “healing environments.”
