Scope

Note: The standard designation, standard sub-type and scope of this Notice of Intent (originally published on April 13, 2023) was updated by the responsible SDO on August 20, 2024.

1.1 Application and material requirements for gas thermal shutoff devices

This Standard applies to gas thermal shutoff devices constructed entirely of new unused parts and materials intended for use after the service meter or second stage regulator, hereinafter referred to as “devices”, ranging from 3/8 in (DN 10) up to 6 in (DN 150) nominal pipe size.

1.2 Automatic gas flow shutoff devices

Devices covered by this Standard automatically shut off the gas flow when they reach a set temperature. This is a single use control.

1.3 Application of devices for use with natural or propane gas

This Standard applies to devices for use with natural or propane gas, at pressures not to exceed 72 psi (496 kPa).

1.4 Ambient temperatures

Unless otherwise specified, all tests specified herein are conducted at the ambient temperatures specified by the manufacturer as follows:

  1. at ambient temperatures of 32 °F (0 °C) and 158 °F (70 °C if the manufacturer’s specified temperature range is from 32 °F (0 °C) to 158 °F (70 °C) and for indoor use only devices; or
  2. at ambient temperatures of −20 °F (−29 °C) and 158 °F (70 °C) if the manufacturer’s specified temperature range is from −20 °F (−29 °C) to 158 °F (70 °C);
  3. at ambient temperatures of −40 °F (−40 °C) and 158 °F (70 °C) if the manufacturer’s specified temperature range is from −40 °F (−40 °C) to 158 °F (70 °C).

1.5 Compliance of non-gas thermal shutoff device components with applicable standards

Components performing functions other than those of a gas thermal shutoff device are to comply with applicable American National Standards or Canadian Standards.

1.6 Reference to pressure measurements

All references to pressure throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures, unless otherwise specified.

1.7 Terminology

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.8 Units of measure

The values given in US customary units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.

Project need:

Project Need

This proposed New Standard is being developed at the request of the Technical Committee and Technical Subcommittee. It will provide the industry with requirements for the construction/installation/use of gas thermal shutoff devices. This will meet the strategic needs of the following key interests: [identify as applicable how industry, regulators, consumers, government or others will benefit by] a) ensuring that the latest innovative/technology/safety features are available for users, b) addressing needs of regulators by providing suitable requirements; and c) supporting certification bodies.

Note: The information provided above was obtained by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and is provided as part of a centralized, transparent notification system for new standards development. The system allows SCC-accredited Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), and members of the public, to be informed of new work in Canadian standards development, and allows SCC-accredited SDOs to identify and resolve potential duplication of standards and effort.

Individual SDOs are responsible for the content and accuracy of the information presented here. The text is presented in the language in which it was provided to SCC.
