Scope (ISO 14034)

This International Standard establishes a methodology to verify the performance of environmental technologies. The purpose of environmental technology verification is to provide a credible and impartial account of the performance of environmental technologies to ensure that verifications are performed and reported accurately, clearly, unambiguously and objectively.

The process is based on reliable test results and robust procedures and facilitated such that, to the greatest extent feasible, methods and data are fully disclosed and reports are clear, complete, objective and useful to the interested parties. To maximize the utility of results, environmental technology verification allows for flexibility in specifying the performance parameters through a dialogue among the applicant, verifier and interested parties.

This International Standard can be used by a verifier to measure the performance of any environmental technology in a verifiable manner, regardless of the intended application of the technology.  This International Standard provides information on the following topics:

  • concepts, terms and definitions related to performance verification;

  • principles and practices relating to performance verification;

  • assessing data for quality and independence;

  • application requirements, verification planning, specification of performance parameters, performing a verification, and reporting results; and,

  • communicating results related to performance verification.

When verifying performance of environmental technologies, this International Standard shall be used in conjunction with ISO 17020 - Conformity assessment — Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection
