Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Accessibility Standard
Scope:
Note: As requested by the responsible SDO, this NOI being reissued as the standard was in the initial stages of development for more than 12 months. An additional comment period of December 17, 2024, to January 14, 2025 will be applied (originally published on November 22, 2022 and previously reissued on February 6, 2024).
Note: The comment period for this NOI has been extended to December 27, 2022 to allow for a collaborative discussion to take place between SCC-accredited SDOs.
This standard applies to the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in public or private spaces and provides the requirements and guidance on accessibility for persons of need, ease of use, and safety for the specific needs of persons with disabilities. The elements of this standard include, but are not limited to:
- Parking layout and the ability to maneuver around the vehicle with assistive equipment;
- Dedicated accessible parking with accessible routes;
- Charge point location guidance;
- Signage;
- Charger orientation and position;
- Accessibility of payment equipment and systems;
- Protection from the elements;
- Handling of cables, connectors, and sockets; and
- Methods for seeking assistance.
Project need:
The push for increased charging infrastructure to meet the ZEV targets will require special considerations to be equally accessible to everyone. Currently, no standards are available for the accessible design or deployment of EV charging stations for persons of need. This includes, but is not limited to, those with mobility issues navigating their way around chargers in dedicated parking spots that provide sufficient space and easy access to charging cords, payment systems, etc. This document can be used by both the public and private sector to assign requirements for the accessibility of EV charging infrastructure.

The system allows SCC-accredited Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), and members of the public, to be informed of new work in Canadian standards development, and allows SCC-accredited SDOs to identify and resolve potential duplication of standards and effort.
