Note: As requested by the responsible SDO, this NOI being reissued as the standard was in the initial stages of development for more than 12 months. An additional comment period of August 9 to August 30, 2023 (originally published on August 30, 2022).

New standard to address the technical requirements of multi-storey, low- to high-rise buildings of volumetric modular construction, including but not limited to provisions for:

• structural design

• mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and systems design;

• construction, transportation, storage and installation;

• maintenance, repair and rehabilitation;

Project need:

Project Need
To support innovation in the field of buildings of volumetric modular construction by providing requirements for their design, construction, installation, use and certification in the Canadian context. This will meet the strategic needs of the following key interests: • industry need design guidance for Modular Construction (Structural, MEP and Foundation design) • addressing the anticipated skilled labour shortage facing the construction sector; • ensuring that the latest innovative/technology/safety features are available for users; • addressing needs of regulators by providing suitable requirements; and • supporting certification bodies.
