Scope

1.1 Scope of this Standard

This Standard specifies requirements for thermoplastic pressure piping. It includes reference publications, definitions, abbreviations, general requirements for materials and manufactured pipe and fittings, relevant test methods, and marking requirements.

Notes:

1) The terms pipe and piping, as well as tube and tubing, are used interchangeably in the CSA B137 Series.

2) This Standard does not specify requirements for venting of combustion gases. In Canada, ULC S636 specifies testing and marking requirements for pipe, fittings, and accessories intended for venting of combustion gases. In the United States, UL 1738 specifies testing and marking requirements for pipe, fittings, and accessories intended for venting of combustion gases.

1.2 Intent of this Standard

This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with one of the other Standards in the CSA B137 Series to form a complete Standard for a particular product.

1.3 Terminology

In this Standard, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 Units

Values are given in SI units. Table C.1provides conversion factors for inch-pound (IP) units.

Project need:

Project Need
To update the current standard due to user experience/feedback/new technology (new edition). This proposed New Edition is being developed at the request of the B137 Technical Committee. It will provide the industry with up to date performance specifications for thermoplastic pressure piping. This will meet the strategic needs of the following key interests: a) ensuring that the latest innovative/technology/safety features are available for users, b) addressing needs of regulators by providing suitable requirements; and c) supporting certification bodies.
