Biomass and Bioproduct Traceability and Chain of Custody
Scope:
This standard provides guidance on requirements and recommendations for the traceability and chain of custody of biomass and bioproducts, enabling tracking from a defined stage, such as end-of-life, back to the biomass source, with applications to bio-based packaging, bioplastics, and other bio-based materials.
Project need:
To enable tracking of biomass and bioproducts from a defined stage, such as end-of-lite, back to the biomass source, while supporting innovation within the Canadian bioeconomy. This proposed New Standard is being developed at the request of NRCan Canadian Forest Service. It will provide the industry with standardized guidance for implementing traceability and chain of custody systems for biomass and bioproducts, supporting sustainability, transparency, and innovation in the bioeconomy.
a) Industry will benefit from clear and standardized guidance to implement traceability and chain of custody systems, demonstrating sustainability practices.
b) Regulators and government agencies will be provided with a framework to support policy development, compliance monitoring, and reporting within the bioeconomy.
c) Consumers and end-users will have greater confidence in the transparency and sustainability of biomass-b_ased products through improved trageability.
d) The broader bioeconomy will be supported by fostering innovation and alignment across sectors, enhancing Canada's leadership in sustainable resource management.
