1. Scope

1.1 This Standard applies to arc welding equipment for voltages up to and including 600 V, intended for use in nonhazardous locations in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. The following types of equipment are included in this Standard: (a) single-phase transformers or transformer-rectifiers; (b) polyphase-transformers or transformer-rectifiers; (c) motor or engine-driven alternators and generators; (d) associated electrical attachments such as wire drive units, arc stabilizer units, remote controls, and optional kits; (e) plasma arc equipment operating in excess of 100 V dc (eg, plasma arc cutting equipment).

1.2 This Standard does not apply to: (a) resistance type welding equipment; (b) arc welders having oil-insulated transformers; (c) welding equipment used in unusual service conditions such as (i) exposure to unusually corrosive fumes; (ii) exposure to steam; (iii) exposure to abnormal vibration or shock; (iv) exposure to unusual seacoast or shipboard conditions; or (v) hazardous locations. Note: The short term "welders" is used throughout this Standard.

1.3 Supplementary requirements that apply to plasma arc equipment are specified in Clause 7 of this Standard.
