Large packagings for the transportation of dangerous goods
Scope:
This standard sets out the requirements for UN Standardized Large Packagings, UN Codes 50 (rigid) and 51 (flexible) in Canada.
Large Packagings are intended to contain inner packagings or articles. They are not in direct contact with bulk dangerous goods. There is no maximum gross mass but their capacity does not exceed 3000L.
Inner packagings of Large Packagings consist of items such as pails, cans, bottles, boxes, sharps containers or bags (of bio-medical waste for example).
Typical articles include (large) batteries, aerosols, racks of safety devices, large pyrotechnic articles (i.e. rockets), empty but soiled packagings, etc.
The most common form of Large Packagings are wheeled bins and bins with forklift pockets constructed in plastic or steel.
This standard is intended for reference in the Transport Canada Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations and is intended for conformity assessment.
