Scope

1.1 This standard applies to one class of Type B ultra low sulphur diesel fuel (<15 ppm S) containing from 6% to 20% by volume of biodiesel.

1.1.1 Users of fuel meeting this standard are advised to refer to the owner’s manual of their vehicle, engine or equipment, or to consult with their equipment’s manufacturer regarding the suitability of the specific fuel blend prior to its use.1 2

1.2 Fuel to this standard is intended for use in high-speed diesel engines that require ultra low sulphur diesel fuel to meet emission control regulations and in high speed diesel-powered equipment that is approved by manufacturers, or suitably converted, to be compatible with fuel blends conforming to this standard. The blends of biodiesel covered by this standard are more appropriate for fleets and users who understand and can manage the potential risks.

1.2.1 Many types of vehicles, engines and equipment (either new or older) are not designed for fuel blends covered by this standard (B6-B20), and use of such biodiesel blends could result in unsatisfactory operation, engine or equipment damage.

1.3 Experience with B6 to B20 biodiesel fuel blends under Canadian conditions is limited. This fuel is intended for use when ambient temperatures and fuel storage conditions permit.

1.3.1 Fuels meeting this standard may not be available in areas that experience low temperatures during fall, winter and spring, due to the difficulty of making these biodiesel blends meet the specified low temperature operability requirements.

1.4 The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.

1 Users of this standard can obtain additional information on the use of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) and the use of

biodiesel fuel blends from the Diesel Fuel Injection Equipment (DFIE) Manufacturers and from the Engine Manufacturers

Association (EMA) at www.enginemanufacturers.org.
