Purpose and Scope
The standard establishes practices related to a system of identification, follow-up and intervention intended for workers of hospitals, mental health centres, substance abuse centres and outpatient care centres such as community health clinics, dentists’ and physicians’ offices, as well as non-governmental organizations that advocate and provide public education material and cessation services.

Project Need
The Government of Canada is committed to reducing tobacco use to less than 5% by 2035 by developing tools such as a standard on tobacco cessation. Indeed, smoking results in illnesses leading to premature death and contributes to billions of dollars in healthcare costs and lost productivity. Reaching the less than 5% tobacco use target is possible but will require a large number of Canadians currently using tobacco to quit. Tobacco cessation is, however notoriously difficult. The systematic use of healthcare standards can support the implementation of these proven life-saving approaches and have the potential to save billions in healthcare costs.

The system allows SCC-accredited Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), and members of the public, to be informed of new work in Canadian standards development, and allows SCC-accredited SDOs to identify and resolve potential duplication of standards and effort.

Individual SDOs are responsible for the content and accuracy of the information presented here. The text is presented in the language in which it was provided to SCC.
