Purpose 

This standard specifies the requirements related to physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of alkaline or dried biosolids used as soil amendments or fertilizers.

It specifies the sampling method and analytical methods that shall be used to evaluate these characteristics. As well, it specifies the marking requirements.

Scope

This standard applies to municipal biosolids resulting from a thermal or an alkaline treatment of municipal and industrial sludges and that are used as soil amendments or fertilizers.

Note: These treatments are recognized for destroying pathogens such as salmonella, enteric viruses and viable Ascaris eggs.

This standard is developed to serve as a reference document for conformity evaluation activities of specific products.

This document does not determine agronomic quality classes for biosolids nor does it specify minimum nutrient content requirements, but it does require nutrient content marking.

This standard does not apply to (final products) of composts and digestates resulting from a composting or anaerobic digestion process as defined in CAN/BNQ 0413-200 Organic Soil Conditioners – Composts and BNQ 0413-500 Organic Amendments – Digestates from biomethanization.

NOTES —

1 Conformity assessment is defined as the systematic examination of the extent to which a process fulfils specified requirements.

2. Other treatments may be used to treat municipal and industrial sludge or digestate. However, they are not specified in this standard. An appendix provides the information necessary to recognize these treatments for information purposes.

Project Need
In the context of the fight against climate change, the management of fertilizing residual materials (FRMs) recycling remains a constant concern for all companies wishing to improve their greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction performance. Thus, it is necessary to focus on biosolids which are an important part of the production of FRMs; these biosolids come from the primary or secondary treatment of municipal or industrial wastewater. The Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ), aware of the need for standardization in the area of FRMs quality management, wishes to publish a standard for Quebec application only that will address the general management of biosolids, including industrial biosolids residues from paper and agri-food industries, to meet the needs of Quebec stakeholders.
