Purpose and scope

This standard specifies requirements for the design, performance, and safety of equipment in an ambulance (patient compartment) used for the transport and care of patients.

The standard also specifies requirements for the working environment, performance and safety of patients and paramedics in the patient compartment.

This document applies to patient compartment mounted on road vehicles, capable of transporting one or more patients and one or more paramedics while ensuring their safety and effective care.

Any vehicle used to accommodate a patient compartment must meet the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and comply with the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.

Project need:

Project Need
A new standard must be developed because the current standard on the subject does not allow the inclusion of electric vehicles. Therefore, a SPEC-BNQ 1013-200 technical specification was developed and published by the BNQ to meet market demand and allow for the introduction of electric ambulances. A new standard will eliminate unnecessary requirements, encourage innovation by users and assemblers and address health and safety needs. The current standard on the subject (1013-110) has already been amended twice and will soon not be able to support any new amendments. The new standard will remove all unnecessary requirements for the vehicle frame and power train from the current subject standard and emphasize the patient compartment and paramedic needs.
