This standard specifies the main characteristics and test methods for backwater valves made of thermoplastic with nominal diameters up to 200 mm (8 in) or made of cast iron with nominal di-ameters up to 375 mm (15 in), and check valves with nominal diameters up to 75 mm (3 in) and maximum operating pressure of 140 kPa (20 psi).

This standard applies to backwater valves designed to be used in drainage systems (see note) and to check valves designed to be used in drainage systems that do not drain by gravity to the building sewer, in compliance with the requirements of the National Plumbing Code of Canada — 2005.

NOTE — The National Plumbing Code of Canada — 2005 defines the term drainage system as fol-lows: "an assembly of pipes, fittings, fixtures, traps and appurtenances that is used to convey sewage, clear water waste or storm water to a public sewer or a private sewage disposal system, but does not include sub-soil drainage pipes".
