White Paper: The state of global AI standardization and what it means for Canada

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the greatest technological advances of our age, and we need to invest efforts to drive its adoption across our economy and society.

Standardization is essential to ensure AI will be used safely and responsibly, which is why we are committed to driving the creation of forward-thinking standards, conformity assessment and accreditation programs that reflect Canadian values and advance our country’s priorities.

With support from SCC, the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI) has released a paper examining the use of standards as part of an AI strategy. Tis paper provides a valuable snapshot of the current AI landscape in Canada and internationally and identifies areas of opportunity for Canada to leverage standardization, at home and abroad.

“SRI’s work with the Standards Council of Canada has been an exciting opportunity to make significant contributions to the regulation of AI. The white paper is an important part of further strengthening Canada’s leadership in the development of AI standards, a crucial piece of the AI regulatory puzzle,”

– Gillian Hadfield, Director, Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society

“We would like to thank SRI for their extensive research on the AI landscape, which will help inform SCC’s ongoing work developing standardization solutions to support Canadian priorities.”

-Pierre Bilodeau, Vice-President, Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement and Interim Vice-President, Standards and International Relations
