Nominations open for Canadian committee advising ISO on machine-readable standards

Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is accepting nominations for the establishment of a Canadian Advisory Committee on machine-readable standards in support of Canada’s participation on ISO Council’s SMART Steering Group (SG).

Technological advances are rapidly changing the way the world does business, collaborates and consumes content. The Steering Group for SMART, which stands for Standards, Machine, Applicable, Readable and Transferable, will help ISO stay responsive to consumer needs. All existing ISO deliverables are made for human consumption, but today’s industries and stakeholders also need consistent delivery mechanisms for emerging innovations. The potential implementation of ISO SMART Standards would transform ISO’s content creation, formatting, and delivery to ensure its products and services are relevant on the market.

The ISO SMART Steering Group will:

  • Provide overall direction of the programme of work and its planning (develop a program plan) and advise ISO Central Secretariat on major decisions and changes related to the program.
  • Provide advice on the communication of the program and actively promote it within the organization and other partners.
  • Agree on the mandate and composition of ad-hoc sub-groups advising the ISO SMART-SG on specific topics.
  • Making recommendations and reporting progress of work to council when needed.

SCC’s Canadian Advisory Committee will include Canadian subject matter experts on machine-readable standards. The advisory committee will meet virtually and/or by correspondence as and when necessary in advance for SMART-SG meetings to review meeting documents. There is no specific term of office. Participation on this advisory committee will align to the work activities of SMART-SG, approximately two years

To join the Canadian Advisory Committee, experts must:

  • Have relevant professional or technical experience related to the subject matter.
  • Have relevant professional standardization experience and an understanding of international, regional, and national standards development processes.
  • Be able to work and communicate in English, including the use of standards business jargon.
  • Have experience in project plan, design, and implementation of standardization projects
  • Be able to uphold the principles of consensus and good governance, respecting the views of other members and ensuring that all positions and views are given equal consideration.
  • Have knowledge and agree to apply ISO and SCC’s principles and working procedures.

Interested candidates must submit the following to Sofia Jaspers-Faijer no later than Friday, May 21, 2021:

  • Resume/CV
  • Justification statement as to how you meet the requirements
