New Chair selected for ISO flagship committee on greenhouse gas and climate change management

The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is pleased to announce that Benoit Desforges is the new Chairperson of the ISO subcommittee on Greenhouse gas and climate change management and related activities (ISO/TC 207/SC 7).
 

Benoit Desforges is Vice-President of the Energy Directorate at Measurement Canada. With more than 30 years of experience in federal public service, Benoit has held various management positions in different departments including in the environmental field. At Environment and Climate Change Canada, his work spanned the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), the use of environmental technologies and clean fuels. Benoit’s involvement in standardization started with the ISO technical committee on Environmental management (ISO/TC 207), where he advanced the development of Environmental Technology Verification standard ISO 14034. Benoit took on other leadership roles including convening working groups, representing Canada on ISO/TC 207 and chairing the Canadian mirror committee for ISO’s subcommittee on Environmental performance evaluation (ISO/TC 207/SC 4). 
 

Canada holds the Secretariat for the ISO subcommittee on Greenhouse gas and climate change management and related activities. ISO/TC 207/SC 7 develops international standards to manage and mitigate GHG emissions and help the world adapt to the effects of climate change. The subcommittee is responsible for developing the high-impact ISO 14060 series of GHG standards, which provides guidance to quantify and report on GHG emissions and removals.
 

Benoit’s distinguished career in the environmental field is an asset to the international standardization community’s work in advancing climate action,” says Chantal Guay, CEO, Standards Council of Canada. “His leadership will advance consensus-based solutions that help organizations manage greenhouse gas emissions.
 

The standards that ISO/TC 207/SC 7 develops support several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) including SDG 13 on Climate Action. The committee has 500 people from 61 participating ISO member countries, and another 25 observing countries. It has 16 published standards and 3 under development.
