SCC and Canadian Intellectual Property Office join forces to boost Canadian innovation

Canadian businesses can now benefit from more coordinated support and resources to help them protect their intellectual property and leverage standardization strategies. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) have paired up, bolstering their partnership.

“We are pleased to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with SCC to strengthen our collaboration in supporting Canadian businesses with their intellectual property and standards-setting strategies,” said Johanne Bélisle, CIPO CEO.

Through joint activities focused on raising awareness about the relationship between intellectual property and standards, both organizations will engage with innovators directly and provide a suite of educational resources.

“We are excited to be joining forces with CIPO to help Canadian innovators succeed and thrive,” says Chantal Guay, SCC CEO. “Through this newly formalized partnership, Canadian businesses will gain a better understanding of how to protect their intellectual property, and how they can leverage it to their advantage in standardization,” she explained.

Work is already underway to develop resources and training, and enhance service and program offerings to help increase awareness, knowledge and use of intellectual property and standardization.

This new partnership supports the Government of Canada’s Intellectual Property Strategy, which was launched in 2018 to help Canadian innovators compete on the global stage.
